England vs Algeria

June 19th, 2010

What a pathetic display by England and what an enspiring match by Algeria. On paper, Algeria had no business winning or tieing that match. But they worked hard and never gave up. Yes, not many chances at goal for them, but they worked their socks off. They now are putting their hopes on beating the US.

What is wrong with England. There is no flow in their match. Not going to writer much more about them, but from the first two performances, they might not advance out of the first round.

But the English fans in Cape Town were very active singing and drinking before the game. Many people would just stand around the areas where the English were sitting just to watch and listen to them. And i heard the fans a few times during the match over the vuvuzelas.

English fans have gotten such a bad reputation as hooligans, but those days are long gone. Both in The Germany WC and the South Africa WC, they some of the funnest fans to be around. Always singing and drinking, but most important, enjoying themselves. Fun to watch.

USA vs Slovenia

June 19th, 2010

This was an exciting match to watch. Slovenia played well in the first half and got rewarded for it with two goals. Bob Bradley’s substitution was brave at the start of the second half, making changes that early, nand they seemed to have an effect. Donavan’s goal was spectacular. To me it looked like the keeper got out of the way on that shot. The second goal also was set up nicely and a cool finish by Bradley. Now, can anyone explain to me what the referee saw to disallow the third goal? On replay I saw at least three other penelties committed on the US players. Again, strange refereeing. Pitty for the US, but they are still in the hunt to move on into the next round. But I don’t see them going all the way. There game is still not as controlled as it needs to be and they give the ball away way to much.

Germany vs Serbia

Germany vs Serbia

Well lots can be said about this match. Refereeing — well both got lots of yellow cards for small fouls. The 2nd yellow on Klose was a bit harsh. A foul for sure. But yellow I think not. It was hard to figure out what was a foul and what was a yellow card offense. But I don’t think it was more for any one team. So we will just leave it.

But one thing came up again in this match as in the first match. Germany can’t finish. They don’t have a goal scorer. Even while Klose in there I just did not feel he was going to score. I am ok with the rest of their game (midfield, defense), but offense looks shaky. Hard to say in the 4-0 win, but if you think back to how many chances were missed and then watch today’s match you again saw the missed chances.

The positive thing about Germany is that I have never seen them run as much as I have over the last two matches. And in the Serbia match Loew brought on three strikers. In past they would have been more conservative. I liked to see that. Overall I am still bullish on them. But they have a large mountain to climb. And World Cup winner I don’t think they will become. But hopefully they will make it into the next round.

Serbia did what they needed to to win this match. Like switzerland, defend with 9 people and then counter attack. And there right sided player owned the German left back. So the result when their way, well done.

France vs Mexico

June 17th, 2010

How pathetic did France look in this match. Wonder how much better ireland would have been?
Mexico deserved that win. But it looks like South Africa will not move on. And it now looks like Mexico will be playing Argentina in the next round.

The first games

June 17th, 2010

The first set of games are behind us and we should all now have a feel for all the teams.

First about the atmosphere here… South Africa is going nuts about their World Cup. Just like in Germany, they are of course very proud of their country. For all the doubters, things have been working out pretty well here. Yes small issues of security guards striking and not all the stadiums being full, but overall it has been working pretty good.

Probably the biggest issue has been the ball and the vuvuzela. The ball is round and within specs. Get over it. The vuvuzela is another story. Interesting they say this is an traditional thing. But from what i hear they stopped years using them at games. People in the paper write letters saying they miss the songs that are usually sung at matches. And if I think back to WC2006, i don’t hear the singing going on in the stadium. I don’t see that changing this WC. What i am afraid of is that the vuvazela will creep into other venues.

To the teams:
Group A
I was hoping that south Africa would might have a chance, but after watching the 2nd match i don’t see that happening. France did not look good. They are missing a midfielder like zidane or viera. Ribery needs help. He can’t do it by himself. Not sure about Mexico or Uruguay.

Group B
Argentina seems to be gaining speed after the second match. I think they have some defensive problems, but they will move to the next round. Nigeria is out. They just don’t good at all. South Korea looked good until they played Argentina. Even though Greece won their match, I don’t think they will make it through.

Group C
England looked shaky. USA looked average. Algeria and Slovenia don’t look strong.

Group D
Germany had a string game against a week opponent. We will have to wait and see how they play against tougher opponent. Ghana also looked good. Still don’t have an opinion about Serbia. Once they have played Germany we will have a better understanding. Australia looked poor.

Group E
Cameroon looked average Holland looked average. Japan was fun to watch. Denmark I just don’t think they will make it into the next round.

Group F
Italy looked very average. The rest I can’t remember.

Group G
Interesting group. N.Korea was a surprise. Portugal looked way below average. Brazil is Brazil. Ivory Coast is still up in the air for me.

Group H
Biggest surprise Spain losing. But i think they will bounce back. A lot of word cup champions have a little slip in the first round before they start gaining momentum. Or they can go like they usually do in WC. They underachieve. We will see in the next match. The other teams should probably not have much of an impact.

The first week and half has been fun. I think the next week is going to give us a clearer picture of the strong teams.

World Cup 2010 is just around the corner

May 30th, 2010

And I am gaining to this one again. I am going to be in South Africa for three weeks. I have ticket to one match. Maybe I have another ticket, at least FIFA charged my credit card but the FIFA web site said My transaction failed. So will have to see.

Anyway I hope to provide updates here.

virtualbox vs …

February 17th, 2008

These past few weeks I had to reinstall my main server. I decided to use Fedora 8. My server is used mainly as a file server and a place where I can run virtual machines. Originally I had used Xen on Fedora 7. That was a nightmare. I got it working on an early kernel, then it broke for a number of kernel releases and finally it was working again. It just was not a good experience. I am used to VMware and there stuff just works — at least for me :-) .

On to Fedora 8 … I thought I would use KVM. Again it did not work out the box. I ended up having to fix things, etc. Again, not the greatest experience. I am not a guy who likes messing around with his systems. I just want them to work. Not have to spend hours fixing them. So, I was just going to go get VMware Server. But, before that, I thought, let me go checkout VirtualBox. I had used it before and was impressed then. I run VirtualBox and it works. Nothing special, just worked. The other thing about VirtualBox is it is fast. While I was running KVM, I felt that the windows UI that I was running as my guest OS was just sluggish. But, VirtualBox is fast. I am very impressed and am going to use it for a while.

But, this brings us to the state of the open source virtualization tools that the distros are producing (maybe that is not fair, because I only tried FC8, so lets at least say what Fedora Team is producing/releasing) are just not up to snuff. Note I said tools and not the virtualization technology itself. I should try Ubuntu because of it’s superior user experience, maybe later…. But as of right now, the comercial products that I have worked with, VMware Client and VirtualBox, are just much better. In the end, I don’t care how the virtualization is being done, just that it works.

New iPhone

July 22nd, 2007

I got a new iPhone a few weeks ago. It has all lived up to the hype and all the good press that it has gotten. I do like this device. I was looking for a phone and ipod combination, and the iphone delivers on both. I use the ipod capability to listen to mostly podcasts. With all the problems that have been reported, I must say that I don’t notice most of them. But, there are two features that bug the hell out of me. The first is how much the wifi capability sucks the battery dry. I now, by default, turn off the Wifi capability and only turn it on if I need it. If I leave it on, the battery is usually close to empty by the end of the day. The second is where the external speaker is located. I hold the iPhone with the device resting on my little pinky finger so that it does not slide out of my hand. But, that is where the external speak is. So, what happens is that the sounds muffled when I hold it in my hand. Very annoying. Anyway, other than these two issue, I like the phone.

I guess I am not blogging as much as I thought

March 18th, 2007

Well, I guess I am not blogging as much as I thought I might.

A few weeks ago I noticed I had a bunch of SPAM on the blog. I installed WordPress’s Akismet and that seems to have solved the problem.

As I mentioned in my last entry, I was planning on learning about Xen. The first thing that I learned about Xen was when I run Windows, I can’t access any of the hardware or I don’t have access to it. I wanted to be able to access my USB device so that I could update my iPod via iTunes, but I could not get it to work. As far as I can tell, right now, this capability is not possible with Xen.

I still don’t have a good way to update my iPod. I keep all my music on the big RAID drive and then let iTunes manage it. Still trying to figure that one out…

I am now starting to play with MythTV. Will probably run the backend as a guest OS under Xen. I am looking into using MythDora. Will have to see how that goes…

My friend Patrick Fitzgerald of BarelyFitz Designs has a great blog. He just posted an example of a presentation he gave at Podcamp Atlanta on Screencasting.

Start trying to blog a little more…

January 7th, 2007

I am going to start trying to blog a little more. Just put down thought that are going through my head or things that I am working on at home or work. The first project that I am embarking on is to learn more about Xen. I have ordered a new AMD dual core motherboard/CPU with virtualization technology, to be able to run Linux and Windows one box. I want to remove all the machines in my house and just have one, but be able to run multiple OSes on it. I will write more as I make progress on this.

Part of the hardware upgrade will include tossing out my Buffalo TeraStation and attaching the IDE drives to the new motherboard. I bought a RAID controller that will do RAID 5 using IDE drives. The TeraStation was just a bad purchase. Currently, when I connect to it with my Windows laptop, it will work for a few minutes and then I lose the share. I suspect that Samba is dying on the TeraStation, because, if I go and do a disk check, it works again for a few minutes and then dies. I called Buffalo twice. In both cases I just did not feel like I got the support that I needed. I have the feeling that this is a closed box that they get from some OEM in Japan and they can’t access the machine’s internals either. And I felt that Buffalo just did not give a damn. Once the support person said, if you still have the receipt for the box and it has not been 12 month, then I could just send it in and get a replacement. But, what if I had it longer than 12 month? SOL? Like I said, I have just decided to dump the TeraStation and am now recommending to all my friends not to deal with Buffalo. Just not a good experience.

But, speaking of good experience, I have to say, I have only had good experiences with Dell. I needed to get a new Windows XP install disk for my Laptop that I had bought from them 3 years ago. I used the online chat/support feature that they have. Talked to a guy and 5 minutes later he was sending me the disks. Another time I had a problem with my motherboard’s power supply. After going through the usual tests they ask you to do, they send me a box and I was able to send them my machine. Within 10 days I had my laptop back. I was impressed. Now, I did buy the extended warranty and maybe that was why I was getting good support. What impressed me was not only how easy things went, but after they were done, they followed up to make sure everything is OK. From, “did you get the box”, to “is everything working now”.

BTW, I love Firefox 2.0’s spell checker. Comes in real handy here.
